There are many reasons that you are pursuing your GED – and we know one big one is to help you get better jobs and build fulfilling careers. At Grace Outreach, we’re here to help as you start on the path to achieving your professional goals.
Who does the Career Prep Program assist?
If you’re a current student in the GED Program, you’ll spend most of your time focused on classwork and homework. But if you are looking for a part-time job while you’re a student, we can help. And thinking ahead, we can also start assisting you in getting more permanent work after you get your GED, if going to college right away isn’t part of your plan.
If you’re a GED graduate, enrolled in College Prep or not, the Career Prep office will be glad to work with you. We’ll be there to guide you from the moment you get started to the moment you get a great job offer…and beyond! (We’ll check in with you after you start your job). Learn more about how Career Prep works below.
How does it work?
Getting started is as easy as setting up a time to chat with Mia Wilson Kahn (mwilson@graceoutreachbronx.org), who is the Career Prep Program Manager at Grace Outreach. The first thing Mia will ask you during your first meeting is what you are looking to do. Maybe you want a short-term job, or maybe you’re ready to start building a career where you can grow. She’ll talk to you about your strengths and interests. She’ll also ask you to give her details about your work experience so far. Since no two job applicants are the same, we can change up our approach to make it specifically for you.
If you have little to no prior work experience, Mia will give advice on how you can create great job-searching tools like your resume, cover letters and thank you notes. She’ll also coach you about interview skills and how to search for jobs online.
If you have some or a lot of professional experience, Mia will help you shape up your resume to make you look as competitive as possible to potential employers with the skills you have. She can also do a refresher on interviewing and job hunting on the web.
What happens when I’m ready to start applying for jobs?
After you create or edit your resume and other materials, Mia will give you feedback and help you as you finalize them. Then she can connect you with job placement and training agencies in the Bronx and throughout New York City that can help place you in specific jobs. At Grace Outreach, we maintain relationships with many different good training programs, so once we get to know you, we’ll know where to introduce you. Here’s a partial list of training programs and partner organizations we may discuss with you:
* Grace Institute
* NEW-NYC
* Strive
* Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York
* Streetwise Partners
* Hostos Allied Heath Career Pipeline Program
* Per Scholas
* Highbridge Community Life Center
* Mercy Center
We’ll also keep you informed about the career events and workshops that take place at Grace Outreach every month or so.
I got a job! Now what?
Now, we stay in touch! Whether you earned your GED at Grace Outreach six months ago or six years ago, our doors are always open to you. We’ll check in occasionally to see how you are doing, and how else we can help as you grow in your career. And if you are ever thinking about learning new job skills, or switching jobs, we hope you’ll contact us if you are looking for guidance on where to start.
To all our Grace Outreach job seekers… we are here to help you move yourself forward!
